The Microsoft Excel function, SUM, is the most used function in all of Excel. We typically use the SUM function at the basic level. But, with a little bit of cell reference magic, we can use the SUM function to create a Running Total.
SUM Function
By using a mix of Absolute ($C$2) and Relative (C2) cell references Excel can create a Running Total. In this case the SUM range should always start in cell $C$2. Then, as the formula is dragged down for each record, the top reference stays while the bottom reference will update to the next row.
